Taken from WONDERS OF THE UNIVERSE-THE COSMOS MADE CONSCIOUS with BRIAN COX.-watched this today on the Science Channel.
Today, Brian spoke about time being an arrow that’s shot forward and never backward. events always happen in the same order-they are never jumbled even though they may appear to be jumbled and they never go backwards (even though it may feel as though people’s decisions are backwards-but that’s just an opinion, isn’t it? Not fact.) He showed us icebergs forming themselves into glaciers-that’s the way that they form, he said. And then stated that the world doesn’t move in reverse. TIme is like an arrow and must always proceed in a forward motion. Changes happen and they are never undone. Therefore, time drives evolution. Life and time and development are represented in ages and eras of time. For instance, this is the era of the IPAD. In 5 years, there will be another technological development and with it a new era. He also said that the future and the past area different yet I know that history repeats itself in cycles of time. When it does that, the cycles of time are pushing time forward , like a cart, and therefore is pushing events and eras with it. Rap and Hip Hop are a facet of the evolution of time-in time there will be another musical genre or a past genre will return in popularity and with that there will be a pushing of time in a forward motion.
The rise and fall of kingdoms and dynasties is an example that immediately comes to mind of history repeating itself. He discussed the Second Law of Thermodynamics to show us that time only runs in one direction, a paradox then?If time only runs in one direction, then how do we account for the fact that history repeats itself? Is time, running forward and backwards at the same time? No one has said that that was possible. So we’ll keep watching, reading , listening and learning.
Second Law of Thermodynamics – In the Beginning…
The implications of the Second Law of Thermodynamics are considerable. The universe is constantly losing usable energy and never gaining. We logically conclude the universe is not eternal. The universe had a finite beginning — the moment at which it was at “zero entropy” (its most ordered possible state). Like a wind-up clock, the universe is winding down, as if at one point it was fully wound up and has been winding down ever since. The question is who wound up the clock?
